Joanna Champion: Celebrating Joanna Jędrzejczyk At Age 39

On August 18, the combat sports world pauses to celebrate one of the most dominant and electrifying champions in Mixed Martial Arts history, Joanna Jędrzejczyk.

Long before she became a household name in the UFC, Jędrzejczyk established a reign of violence and technical precision in the octagon that earned her the moniker “Joanna Champion”. Today, we look back at her rise from a quiet Polish town to the top of the combat sports world and what she’s been up to since hanging up the gloves.

Early Life and the Spark for Striking

Born on August 18, 1987, in Olsztyn, Poland, Joanna grew up as one of three daughters in a close-knit family. Unlike many combat sports icons who grew up on a wrestling mat or in a boxing gym, Jędrzejczyk’s path to fighting came almost by accident.

Around age 16, she began taking Muay Thai classes simply as a way to stay in shape and learn self-defense. What began as a routine workout quickly transformed into a obsession with elite striking technique. She possessed a rare combination of hand speed, footwork, cardio, and an unyielding competitive drive.

Dominating The Ring: Muay Thai And Kickboxing

Before making her mark in MMA, Jędrzejczyk was an international powerhouse in kickboxing.

  • Muay Thai Excellence: She won five IFMA World Championships as an amateur and claimed multiple European titles.
  • Professional Stature: Turning professional, she captured prestigious belts under banners like the World Kickboxing Federation (WKF) and World Muaythai Council (WMC).
  • Record: Over a decade in kickboxing and Muay Thai, she compiled over 60 amateur and professional victories against world-class opposition.

Transition To MMA, And UFC Debut

Recognizing that MMA offered the ultimate stage for her skillset, Jędrzejczyk made her professional mixed martial arts debut in May 2012.

She sliced through her competition on the European circuit, building a perfect 6-0 record across regional promotions. Her lightning-fast striking, coupled with a rapidly developing sprawl to neutralize wrestlers, caught the attention of UFC talent scouts.

In July 2014, Jędrzejczyk made her UFC debut at UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs. Miller, defeating Juliana Lima via unanimous decision. Five months later, she edged out top contender Cláudia Gadelha in a high-stakes split decision, securing her place as the number-one contender for the strawweight crown.

Joanna Champion: Reign Over The Strawweights

At UFC 185 in March 2015, Jędrzejczyk put on a masterclass performance against inaugural strawweight champion Carla Esparza, defending takedowns effortlessly and delivering a devastating TKO in the second round to capture the belt.

Thus began one of the most dominant title reigns in women’s MMA history!

  1. Title Defense 1: TKO victory over Jessica Penne (UFC Fight Night 69)
  2. Title Defense 2: Unanimous decision against Valerie Létourneau (UFC 193)
  3. Title Defense 3: Unanimous decision win over rival Cláudia Gadelha (TUF 23 Finale)
  4. Title Defense 4: Unanimous decision over Karolina Kowalkiewicz (UFC 205)
  5. Title Defense 5: Dominant unanimous decision against Jessica Andrade (UFC 211)

Beyond her defense count, Joanna delivered one of the greatest fights in combat sports history at UFC 248 in March 2020 against Zhang Weili. The 25-minute war was a relentless exchange of high-volume striking that won Fight of the Year across nearly every major outlet.

Life After The Octagon

Following a rematch with Zhang Weili at UFC 275 in June 2022, Joanna laid her gloves down in the center of the Octagon, officially announcing her retirement.

Her post-fighting career has been just as active.

  • UFC Hall Of Fame (Class of 2024): Joanna was enshrined into the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame, becoming the second female fighter in history to receive the honor.
  • Hall Of Fame Fight Induction: Her historic war against Zhang Weili at UFC 248 was also enshrined into the UFC Hall of Fame’s Fight Wing.
  • Motorsport & Racing: An avid gearhead, Joanna transitioned into rally car driving and motorsport events in Europe.
  • Broadcast & Ambassador Work: She remains a mainstay at major UFC events, appearing on broadcast panels, hosting Q&A sessions, and mentoring rising talent from Poland and American Top Team.
  • Business & Fitness: Jędrzejczyk has built a thriving brand portfolio in Poland, launching fitness initiatives and working extensively with philanthropic causes.

“I want to be remembered as one of the greatest—and I know I am.”

— Joanna Jędrzejczyk

Happy Birthday to a pioneer, a true legend of combat sports, and forever a champion!
