This weekend caged grappling returned to the shores of Mentor, Ohio with the now ubiquitous UGI 9 Caged Grappling Series. The grappling tournament was held on Saturday January 31st at Upgraded Industries. Now in it’s nineth iteration, this time the event featured sidebar achievements such as Match Of The Day, Fastest Sub, and Best Sub, winners earning additional cash prizes.
The matches are in a straightforward, single elimination format starting in the morning, and progressing through the afternoon towards the main event. Matches are scored similar to in larger competitions like ADCC and CJI, but as always submissions reign supreme!
Jon Soltis would walk away with the fastest submission on the evening, sealing the deal with yet another heelhook, this one in only 27 seconds, a finish not dissimilar to his previous UGI performances.
Jayden Potok of Ravenna’s Counterstrike Gym would take home the nod for best submission of the event, winning handily with a flying triangle to armbar in his redemptive return to the UGI cage.
Last, but certainly not least the match of the day would be awarded to Nathan Napierkoski and young Forrest Ramage. Forrest would secure the victory via a rear naked choke from back control.
Prograppler and it’s staff would like to congratulate all those who competed and coached in the event, but also a big shoutout to DJ at Upgraded Industries, and Tim Lange with Catch And Submit for putting the event on and making everything run smoothly! Stay tuned for the next UGI Caged Grappling Event, and as always, thank you for grappling!
