The Summer Of Subs Sizzles On: Week 3 TGGL Lightweight Action!

Summer may have just recently begun(officially), but the TGGL continues to rage on, going now into it’s third week, and nearing it’s ultimate culmination. In today’s recap we have the lightweight division. The TGGL lightweight division has had some of the most action packed matches of the TGGL, and I’m certain this installation will be no different from that!

The first match would be the Wittreich vs Stanley rematch. Both of these men having previously faced each other in an earlier installment of the TGGL. Tackle’s Tyler Wittreich entering into the match with 48 league points, whereas Levitate’s Mason Stanley has 29.

The match would start with Wittreich hitting a slide-by, and immediately getting his hooks in for back control off of his takedown.

Soon after taking Stanley’s back, we see Wittreich sink the arm in and quickly get the tap, the points, and the victory.

Next up, we’d see Tackle’s Marty Rehor face off against Tj Stuber of Control Martial Arts. Rehor walking into this match with 17 TGGL league points on hand, and Stuber with 12 of his own.

The match would start off with Rehor retaining the front headlock position off of a failed shot by Stuber. However Stuber does well to maintain his composure and hand fighting Rehor’s attempts at putting together a choke.

Eventually it would be Tj Stuber with a takedown of his own that would change the top/bottom relationship of the affair, but Rehor would continue to fight for position.

The match would be reset after the two pushed the boundaries of the match outside of the scope of the cameraman’s vision.

Stuber’s guard game would prove victorious here, as he gets in on one of Marty’s legs, and sinks the heelhook for the victory and the points!

The next matchup featured Epifanio Peterson out of Academy 440, facing off against Luke Baeppler of Tackle Jiujitsu. Epi coming into the match with 20 league points, and Luke with 12 of his own.

Epi would choose to pull guard in this match up, content to play s variation of open guard for much of the match as Luke looks to set up a pass.

This match featured a lot of great back and forth due to the fighter’s conflicting styles, Luke doing a good job of basing down, and then using athleticism to try and burst past Epi’s guard, but Epi would defend well, and even turn defense into offense several times, including a very tight armbar attempt.

In the end, Epi would sit back on Luke’s leg, garnering a quick tap from Baeppler, giving the points and the victory to Epifanio Peterson.

The next match of the evening pitted Mason Stanley vs Luke Baeppler. Mason coming into the match with 29 league points, and Luke with 12 league points.

A scramble would ensue, though it wasn’t exactly clear who initiated the shot, however Mason Stanley would find himself on top of Luke Baeppler, placing the match pretty firmly into half and closed guard for much of it’s duration.

We would see some submission attempts from both men, but Luke would appear to be more of the aggressor, though positionally a bottom.

Though several submissions were sent by the men, nothing meaningful would stick in either direction, and eventually the match would find itself ran through the entirety of the 6 minute length. Baeppler being declared winner by referee decision.

John Soltis vs Tj Stuber would be the next match of the evening. Soltis fighting out of Cleveland Institute of BJJ, walking into this match with 36 league points already accrued, and Stuber fighting out of Control Martial Arts enters the match with 24 league points of his own.

The action starts in this match with Soltis going for an anklepick on Stuber, and Stuber reacts by engaging his guard, starting to build back off of his back.

Stuber ends up shooting several submission attempts on Soltis from closed guard including both a triangle and several armbar attempts, all of which Soltis defends well.

Soltis does manage to eventually pass the guard of Stuber, to get into side control, before Stuber reacts by turtling.

Once turtled, Soltis slips his hooks into Stuber, and goes immediately for a rear naked choke, which we will see him complete for the victory and the points.

The final match of the evening would see Tackle’s Marty Rehor go up against John Soltis of Cleveland Institute of BJJ. Marty coming to the match with 17 league points, and John with 48 league points.

Rehor would score first, getting the initial takedown, but Soltis defends well, sweeping Marty into bottom position, and beginning the attack from there.

We would see Soltis employ an interesting way to step over into mount, grabbing his own foot and essentially throwing it to the pass, and while his attempt didn’t get him the mount, it would see him get back control, where he would go on to win via another rear naked choke.

As another exciting round of TGGL matches wraps up, I wonder which match was your match of the evening? Are there any matches that didn’t go the way you had thought? Let me know down in the comments! And, as always, thank you for grappling!
