From Undisputed To Admin: GGG Elected President Of World Boxing

The legendary two-time middleweight world champion was voted in by unanimous acclamation at the organization’s congress in Rome on Sunday, November 23, 2025. Golovkin, 43, ran unopposed after becoming the only candidate to successfully pass the independent vetting process. He succeeds Dutch official Boris van der Vorst, who chose not to seek a second term.

For a sport currently on the ropes with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the election of a figure as universally respected as Golovkin is not just a hiring decision, it is a survival strategy.

While Golovkin is accustomed to unified titles, this new presidency carries a weight far heavier than any championship belt. World Boxing was formed in 2023 as a breakaway governing body, designed to replace the scandal-ridden International Boxing Association (IBA). The IBA was stripped of recognition by the IOC due to longstanding governance, finance, and ethical issues, leaving boxing’s place in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in serious jeopardy.

As President, Golovkin’s role is less about administration and more about high-stakes diplomacy.

Athlete Advocacy: In his acceptance speech, Golovkin emphasized that “athletes will be at the heart of every decision we make,” signaling a shift away from the political infighting that has plagued the sport.

Securing Olympic Status: The single most critical metric of his tenure will be whether he can convince the IOC to officially recognize World Boxing as the sport’s governing body in time for the LA 2028 Games.

Global Recruitment: World Boxing has seen rapid growth, with reports indicating membership has surpassed 130 national federations. Golovkin’s job is to continue this momentum, convincing the remaining holdouts to leave the IBA and join the new body to ensure a unified front.

Restoring Integrity: Golovkin is tasked with implementing transparent governance and ensuring fair play, areas where the sport’s previous leadership historically failed.

For World Boxing, the hope is that the man who famously never took a step backward in the ring can now push the entire sport forward.

“It is a privilege to be elected as the new President of World Boxing,” Golovkin told the Congress. “On the road to LA28, we will restore trust in Olympic boxing to secure our place in Brisbane and beyond. Now it’s time to move forward as one united boxing family.”
