Notably Notorious: The On-Going Struggle-Saga Of Conor McGregor

The latest news regarding Conor McGregor’s extended suspension from the UFC for a missed drug test has once again cast a shadow over the career of one of the sport’s biggest stars. This isn’t the first time “The Notorious” has found himself in hot water with the promotion, and each new incident seems to further complicate his potential return to the octagon.

McGregor’s history with infractions is almost as storied as his highlight-reel knockouts. Beyond the current drug test issue, he’s faced a number of disciplinary actions from the UFC. Remember the infamous bus attack in Brooklyn leading up to UFC 223? That earned him a suspension and legal troubles. Then there was the post-fight melee at UFC 229 after his bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov, which resulted in a significant suspension and fine from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. His unapproved cage jump at a Bellator event also drew the ire of regulators.

Off the fighting stage, McGregor has also had a series of well-publicized legal issues, including altercations in pubs and accusations of assault, which, while often resolved, consistently keep him in the headlines for reasons other than his fighting prowess. These incidents, both inside and outside the sport, have undoubtedly tested the patience of the UFC and its president, Dana White.

So, where does all of this leave Conor McGregor in the official UFC rankings? Currently, he’s unranked in any division. His last fight was a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021, where he suffered a broken leg. Before that, he had a loss to Poirier in January 2021 and a quick TKO win over Donald Cerrone in January 2020. With over two years since his last victory and a lengthy layoff due to injury and now suspension, it’s not surprising to see him absent from the top 15 in either lightweight or welterweight, the divisions he’s most frequently competed in. Regaining a spot in the rankings will require not just a return, but a significant win streak against ranked opponents.

The critical question remains, does this latest suspension bode well for his eventual return to a UFC fight card? The simple answer is no, not in any sort of logical world. Another suspension, especially for a drug test violation (regardless of intent), only adds to the narrative of unreliability and potential distraction. It further distances him from active competition and gives more time for new stars to emerge and captivate the audience.

However, it’s Conor McGregor we’re talking about. He is still arguably the biggest draw in the sport, and a “money fight” with McGregor involved virtually guarantees massive pay-per-view numbers. The UFC is a business, and that business thrives on big events. While the suspensions and legal issues are undoubtedly a headache, the allure of McGregor’s star power is a powerful counterpoint.

Speculation is rampant. Could this extended time away allow him to fully recover, refocus, and return with a renewed hunger? Or will these repeated issues continue to chip away at his career, making a truly impactful return less and less likely? Dana White has always had a complex relationship with McGregor, often expressing frustration but never truly closing the door. The path back to a title shot, or even a top contender fight, is now longer and more challenging than ever. He’ll need to prove he can consistently adhere to regulations, stay out of trouble, and, most importantly, show that he still has the elite-level skills that once made him a two-division champion.

For now, the UFC, and its fans, play the waiting game. The legend of Conor McGregor continues to be written, but the chapters since his double-champ days have been filled with more controversy than triumph. His eventual return, if it happens, will be one of the most anticipated in UFC history, but the groundwork for that return is becoming increasingly rocky.
